Frequently Asked Questions About Crane Maintenance Schedules

A knuckle-boom crane works regularly under heavy loads, so servicing it at the right time plays an important role in maintaining performance, ensuring safety, and limiting downtime.

Below are the questions customers most commonly ask when planning crane maintenance.

01. How often should a knuckle-boom crane be serviced?

There's no single maintenance schedule that fits every crane model. Service frequency depends on the crane model, operating hours, work intensity, and environmental conditions.

For equipment that works frequently, or in environments with heavy dust, mud, salt, and heavy loads, inspection and maintenance may need to happen more often.

PALFINGER recommends following the maintenance schedule in each unit's technical guide, and adjusting it to match actual usage conditions.

02. What does a crane maintenance service include?

A maintenance visit isn't simply an oil change.

Typically, technicians inspect and carry out items such as:

  • An overall inspection of the crane's condition.
  • Checking the hydraulic system and oil level.
  • Checking hoses, fittings, and potential leak points.
  • Checking pins, bushings, bolts, and moving joints.
  • Lubricating points as required.
  • Checking parts for signs of wear.
  • Checking operating functions and safety devices.
  • Cleaning, adjusting, or replacing parts as needed.

PALFINGER notes that periodic service programs may include oil checks, filter replacement, routine maintenance, and inspection per regulations.

03. Does a rarely used crane still need maintenance?

Yes.

A crane being used less often doesn't mean maintenance can be skipped. Oil, seals, hydraulic hoses, lubrication points and many other parts can still be affected by time and storage conditions.

So besides operating hours, it's important to track the time since the last service and the equipment's actual condition.

04. If the crane still operates normally, does it still need servicing on schedule?

Yes. Don't wait until the crane develops a fault to service it.

Periodic maintenance helps catch signs of wear or abnormality early, before they develop into major breakdowns.

According to PALFINGER, preventive maintenance increases equipment availability and reduces unplanned downtime.

05. When should a crane be serviced earlier than scheduled?

Have it checked early if the crane shows signs such as:

Oil leaks – slow or jerky operation – unusual noise – strong vibration – loose pins/bolts – control system or warning faults.

In addition, if the crane regularly works in harsh conditions or at high intensity, the maintenance schedule should be adjusted accordingly.

06. Should crane maintenance be done at home or on-site without a technician?

Some basic checks and routine care can be carried out following the equipment's operating instructions.

However, for items related to the hydraulic system, lifting mechanism, safety devices, and technical repairs, it's best left to a qualified technician.

Following the proper maintenance procedure helps reduce the risk of incorrect installation, missed faults, or additional damage to the equipment.

Servicing on schedule keeps a crane always ready

A good maintenance schedule should be based on the equipment model, operating hours, working conditions and the crane's actual condition — not just a fixed time interval applied to every case.

PALFINGER offers service programs at multiple levels, from oil checks and filter replacement to periodic maintenance, inspection, repairs, and replacement of worn parts.

PALFINGER VIPEC helps customers check equipment condition, advises on the right maintenance schedule, and carries out technical work as required for each crane model.
